Bald Eagle Bytes
-
The bald eagle is the only eagle that is endemic to (existing only in) North America.
-
Though we associate a regal screech with these magestic eagles, they actually make a rather ungainly high-pitched squeaking sound. A red-tailed hawk's call is usually 'voiced over' bald eagles in media!
-
Juvenile bald eagles have brown heads. Only adults have the characteristic white "bald" heads.
Conservation Challenge
Loss of coastal habitat and lead poisoning are the primary threats to our national bird. Lead is still legal to use in bullets and shotgun cartridges, and eagles often accidentally eat lead pellets while scavenging carcasses. If hunting, be sure to use cartridges without lead pellets to help save this regal bird, and spread awareness of this threat to others!
